Okay, here's my stab at it-
To write a story in your dream represents your creativity and imagination- in this case, probably your actual writing itself.

To see a friend (but not someone specific) generally signifies an aspect of your own personality. In this case a very critical part, I'd say, from whom you seek validation but don't get it.

Your house represents your own soul or self.

So, in the first paragraph, I'd say that you are wanting to write a story, but certain parts of you are convinced it will be crap, so why try? You lack confidence and aren't getting the internal validation you seek to take the risk.

A kitchen is a place where we get sustenance- where we are fed and nurtured. Alternatively the kitchen, represents a transformation- where things are created though a combination of ingredients.

To dream that you are drinking or need your coffee, suggests that you need to gain some insight and knowledge before making a decision or tackling some project/relationship. But I think the variety of coffee in your dreams is really interesting. If we take it back to the story issue, it may mean that you are being exposed to all kinds of story "possibilites" or ideas or forms, and you are looking into each one.

And as for the cups communicating your "friend's" criticism- that may mean that even as you are exposed to all these new story ideas and possibilities, your inner critic is whispering in your ear that it will all be crap, so why try.

I think this dream is mainly about your inner critic- an internal part that every writer has to master before they can get over fear of failure and just write anyway.

Cool dream really, and I'd suggest asking yourself (right before you go to bed) to dream about how to handle your inner critic so you can write better without fear. You just might get a dream that will help your subconscious break through your inner critic's barriers.

Joff,
Do you ever try to interpret your dreams? Its a hobby of mine, actually, and I've been known to be quite accurate. If you'd like me to give this one a go, I'd be happy to.

Joff, What a splendid and detailed account of the evening. You must have taken copious notes:)

Anyway, even though I was there, I appreciate this written record very much. I tend to latch on to something a speaker says and go on my own little, imaginative thought trail, which often results in me missing quite a lot.

But it also makes me a good writer. Hehe:)
